The Chicago Bears held a joint practice against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday, ahead of Saturday's preseason game, and it did not go as planned for the offensive line.
Chicago consistently struggled to defend defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, who got multiple pressures throughout the practice as well as tipping and intercepting a pass attempt by quarterback Caleb Williams. This is a little concerning, especially because Lawrence was getting pressure in the interior, which consists of left guard Joe Thuney, center Garrett Bradbury and right guard Jonah Jackson. Thuney and Jackson were both with the Bears last season and Bradbury is a seasoned center.
The Bears offense was still able to make some impressive plays, including a touchdown from
quarterback Caleb Williams to tight end Colston Loveland. Overall, Lawrence was very impressed with what he saw out of Williams.
"He’s a competitor and I think he’s a special quarterback," Lawrence said of Williams. "In the middle of the practice he caught fire, but we came back and fought."
This was not the first time Lawrence went against Williams. Last season, when Lawrence was with the New York Giants, Williams and the Bears had one of their impressive fourth-quarter comebacks. Chicago’s game against New York was actually Williams’ best rushing performance of the season with eight runs for 63 yards, including the game-winning 17-yard touchdown.
Lawrence will not be playing in the Bears' preseason game against the Bengals on Saturday since Cincinnati is resting their starters. It is unclear at this time if Williams or any of the other starters will be in the game.
