Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson remained mum on who would start at quarterback -- Tyson Bagent or Case Keenum -- in their game against the New York Jets on Sunday.
With starter Caleb Williams sidelined for a second week with a hamstring injury, all signs are pointing to Bagent -- Williams' backup -- as the starter vs. the Jets, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Per Rapoport, Bagent took most of the starting reps in practice this week.
"My understanding is that Tyson Bagent took the majority of the first-team reps at practice this week. While Ben Johnson has not yet named a starter, the expectation is that the backup quarterback, Tyson Bagent, is the starter on Sunday," Rapoport said on The Insiders on NFL Network. "[Johnson] has not yet made
it official. Certainly, Case Keenum would still be in the mix, especially after the heroics of last week, but it certainly seems like the direction they are going is going to be Tyson Bagent."
Keenum got the starting nod in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles with Williams injured and Bagent missing most of practice week with a concussion. While Keenum turned in an impressive showing against the Eagles, there's a reason why Bagent was QB2 coming out of training camp.
“And if you’re wondering why, Ben Johnson actually gave this to us earlier in the week. As he was getting on his press conference very late after the game, he mentioned, Tyson Bagent won the backup job out of camp, and there is a reason for that. They believe in him. They believe in the direction he can take the offense. They have also paid him. That is why this makes sense. We’ll see what the Bears end up doing, but all signs point to Tyson Bagent getting the start this week for Chicago.”
Williams is considered "week-to-week" with his hamstring injury, which could sidelined him 3-4 weeks, putting a potential timetable for return in two weeks. But the Bears are confident in all three quarterbacks on the roster to lead the offense.
