Historically, the Chicago Bears have been defined by their powerful defenses. The 1985 Bears, in addition to the legendary Walter Payton, are known for their defense which included multiple Hall of Famers. Now, head coach Ben Johnson is giving Chicago a new reputation -- a team with a formidable offense.
Quarterback Caleb Williams had one of the best seasons in Bears’ history with the third-most passing touchdowns in a season and breaking the record for the most passing yards in franchise history. In fact, after only two seasons, Williams already has the ninth-most passing yards of any player in franchise history and could easily move into the top-five by the end of the season.
One factor that helps Williams is Chicago’s strong run game to balance
the offensive attack. The Bears had one of the best rushing offenses in the league last season with running backs D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai. Swift put up over 1,000 rushing yards last season while Monangai had 783 rushing yards. They also combined for 14 rushing touchdowns. With all of the talent on this roster, Swift said it makes the game fun while also holding players accountable.
“We got so many guys that can go. Every position,” Swift said. “It’s a great offense to be a part of. It makes it fun. It makes you want to be on your game and make sure you’re not the one lacking at that particular time because they can throw the ball to anybody and you can go the distance at any time.”
Chicago also has a dynamic duo at receiver with Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III, who both possess the talent to be a No. 1 receiver. Tight end Colston Loveland led the Bears in receptions and receiving yards as a rookie last season and is already viewed as one of the best in the league. All in all, there is no reason the Bears cannot be one of the top offenses in the NFL again this year.
