The Chicago Bears may have given up 37 points in the season opener against the Carolina Panthers, but their performance against the Green Bay Packers might have been worse. It certainly feels worse given Chicago’s offense at least showed up against the Panthers.
Among the Bears’ defenders that did not execute was cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who's supposed to be Chicago’s lockdown corner. But teams have been picking on him all season after his normal performance against the Panthers. After the embarrassing 31-7 loss, Johnson shared what head coach Ben Johnson said to the team.
“That we just didn’t execute good enough, top to bottom from offense to defense, special teams,” Johnson said. “We didn’t do [a] good enough job of the things that we said we want
to do, especially on defense and taking away the deep shots … and then just on the offense, just [not] executing at the level that they wanted to.”
Saying the Bears did not execute well enough is an understatement. Green Bay had two touchdowns over 40 yards to Christian Watson. They had numerous other successful deep shots including to receiver Matthew Golden and tight end Tucker Kraft who each had receptions for 45 yards. Chicago had no answers for the Packers’ offense and the secondary was ripped to shreds.
The Bears will need to respond with a win in their Week 6 game against the Atlanta Falcons. Hopefully, Chicago will have quarterback Caleb Williams back. In his three games against the NFC South, Williams is undefeated.
