The arrival of Ben Johnson and growth of Caleb Williams in 2025 reset future expectations for the Chicago Bears. As such, they enter the 2026 campaign with their sets sight on continued success as far as the standings are concerned. This is no longer about development on its own but tangible, measurable success.
With that said, there remains a wide range of outcomes as to what shape the season could actually take for Johnson and the Bears. They're a regression candidate given the number of late-game victories they relied upon and the turnovers that manifested as part of it all. They also face a tough schedule that features both of last year's Super Bowl squads and a host of other top tier contenders. Development still matters, but so do wins.
Luckily, the organization is working with an ideal man in charge of it all. Intense as he may be, Johnson offered a bit of perspective on what constitutes success in 2026.
“We want to do big things this year, but really what’s most important to us is that we’re laying the foundation the right way," he said. "… It’s a long race here. We just need to bring consistent energy, attitude, effort throughout this thing and we’ll be in great shape.”
The perspective brought by Johnson feels notable in that the success itself in 2026 matters. However, there's also the matter of the long-term. The success of last year's Bears could be considered early in only Year 1 of Johnson's tenure as head coach. Considering the stakes of developing a franchise quarterback, myriad offensive weapons coming into their own, and a defense that remains a work in progress, that an eye on the long-term still exists as well feels valuable in how leadership continues to approach this team. It's not merely about success in 2026 but how that serves as a springboard for continued success for all involved.
Don't get it twisted; the 2026 Chicago Bears are a team expected to be in contention. Even if some regression does manifest, though, it's clear that Ben Johnson believes intangible qualities now will yield positive results later. It's an important, measured approach from a wildly intense individual. That, perhaps, makes it all the more noteworthy, but remains an important mindset as the Bears prepare to open their season this weekend.
