Just like last season, the Chicago Bears have had a battle for the starting left tackle spot. Braxton Jones appears to be the frontrunner, considering he didn't see the field at all, with Kiran Amegadjie getting a lot of time in Chicago’s final preseason game against the Tennessee Titans.
But left tackle isn't the only spot with uncertainty heading into the regular season. Chicago seemed to have their starting safety situation set when training camp began with Coby Bryant, who played with the Seattle Seahawks last year, and first round draft pick Dillon Thieneman out of Oregon. But, that plan was quickly derailed when Bryant suffered a knee injury that will keep him out most, if not all, of the regular season and subsequent injuries in the secondary
after him.
After Saturday's preseason finale win against the Titans, Bears head coach Ben Johnson discussed those two position battles, and he revealed that he's actually more confident in left tackle than safety right now.
"This game was going to be a big part of the equation, so we got to go back and look at this tape," Johnson said. "I think we probably feel better about the tackle conversation right now than safety. Like I said, we’ll have some good conversations on that and see how that unfolds, but a lot of big decisions to be made in the morning. It’s always a tough time of the preseason just because you know it’s coming around the corner here. So, we’ll enjoy our plane ride home as a 90-man crew one last time."
Whoever the Bears decide to have on their initial 53-man roster at safety, it will probably not stay that way. If any other NFL teams cut a decent safety prospect, it would not be surprising if the Bears put in a waiver wire request or sign them once they become a free agent.
