The Chicago Bears had an historic showing in their season opener against the Carolina Panthers, where the offense shined with 59 points, 552 yards, including 291 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, including six rushing scores.
After scoring 59 points, the Bears offense looks like they really could break the record for the highest scoring in NFL history, something head coach Ben Johnson voiced earlier this offseason. However, offensive coordinator Press Taylor says the offense is not focused on that going into their Week 2 game against the Minnesota Vikings.
“You couldn’t be happier with the intent [the players have] come to work this week,” Taylor said. “It’s easy to sit there and say, ‘We scored 59, we’re pretty good.’ I think the guys understand
what’s ahead of us and in the NFL how fine that line is. A couple broken tackles, we end up getting out on some things. We had a couple extra possessions on certain things in the first half there. It’s a fine line and it worked in our favor scoring points. But I think our guys understand that no week carries over. They’re not going to let us bring any of those points from last week to this game.”
Chicago has never scored 59 points against the Vikings although they did put up 52 points on Minnesota back in 1961. However, since Brian Flores became the defensive coordinator for the Vikings in 2023, the most points the Bears have put up against Minnesota is 27 points back in quarterback Caleb Williams’ rookie season.
Flores’ defense will certainly be a greater challenge than the Carolina Panthers defense was in the season opener. So, the Bears may not put up 59 points in this game, but they could certainly get at least 30 with all the weapons Chicago has offensively. The Bears’ defense will be a greater concern after allowing 37 points in the opener.
