The Chicago Bears offense put together an otherworldly performance in their season opener against the Carolina Panthers, where they emerged with a 59-37 win and totaled 552 yards in the process.
Quarterback Caleb Williams was one of the biggest stars of the game, where he looked poised, confident and put together one of his best games of his young career. He completed 21-of-29 passes (72%) for 269 yards and two touchdowns while adding 10 rushes for 65 yards and two scores.
There were a number of impressive plays that Williams was responsible for, be it through the air or on the ground, but none of those were his favorite play of the game. That honor goes to running back Kyle Monangai, who broke free for a 61-yard rushing touchdown at the end of the third
quarter.
"It was a big moment for us," Williams said. "It was a momentum swinger for us. That's a crushing thing [for the defense] when you're in that situation. You're [near] midfield, and you get a downhill run that goes for [61 yards].
"The way the O-line blocked right there, I think that play specifically is who we want to be; O-line, we want to move people off the ball; wide receivers, we want to be able to block at the point of attack. They did that, moving guys around and allowed Kyle to make the cut and go vertically, and then the second effort at the end for Jahdae [Walker] with three people chasing, how he kind of blocked all three at that point. That was probably my favorite play of the game."
With Monangai's score, it gave the Bears a two-touchdown lead over the Panthers heading into the final quarter. That, coupled with the defense's improved second-half performance and another pair of Chicago touchdowns, helped pave the way for a dominant win for the Bears in Week 1.
