Throughout the lead-in to their Week 4 matchup against the New York Jets, Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson heard plenty of debate whether he should start veteran Case Keenum or Tyson Bagent at quarterback.
Keenum was coming off a memorable performance in the Week 3 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, where he threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, giving the Bears a win in his first start in 1,009 days since 2023. Hearing all the frenzy in the media, Johnson decided to make a statement with his two quarterbacks and brought them both out for the opening play.
Keenum was in the game under center on the first offensive snap of the game, when he handed the ball off to running back D'Andre Swift, while Bagent was lined up at wide receiver,
which led to Keenum getting the victory despite that being the only snap he played.
After the win over the Jets, Johnson said having both quarterbacks out there was a "passing of the torch" moment from Keenum to Bagent, and he was proud of how the young quarterback performed after a week in which him starting was kept under wraps for the most part. As for the team's Week 5 matchup against the Green Bay Packers, it has already been announced that the Bears will have Bagent to start the game.
