The Chicago Bears have a lot of weapons on offense. But through the first three weeks of the season, Rome Odunze did not play much of a role with only eight catches for 139 yards without a touchdown.
While he is still looking for his first touchdown of the season, Odunze was much more involved in Chicago’s win against the New York Jets with six receptions for 94 yards. After the game, Odunze reflected on how he was able to capitalize off his opportunities in the Bears’ Week 4 win.
“It felt great,” Odunze said. “I love it. I love to be involved in the passing game. Obviously as a pass catcher those plays are fun. Love to do that as often as I can. But I don’t think it was anything different [than previous games], just more opportunities came my
way and I was able to capitalize on those opportunities.”
Part of Odunze’s slow start in the first two games was not getting a lot of targets. He was only targeted three times in the season opener against the Carolina Panthers and had four receptions in Week 2’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings. There were more targets than came in Week 3 with Case Keenum at quarterback, but he still only had three receptions. Odunze explained that there is a rhythm to having a good game and that he is always ready for the ball to come his way.
“I think there’s a rhythm to it,” Odunze said. “It’s nice to be looked at early and often. But at the receiver position you never know when the ball’s going to come your way so you have to be ready the whole game through.”
Chicago will be looking for another big day out of Odunze when they take on the Green Bay Packers this coming Sunday. Odunze was not able to play in either regular season game against the Packers last year due to injury and only had two receptions in their playoff win. Back in 2024 when the Bears defeated Green Bay in Lambeau, Odunze also was not too involved with only two receptions for 18 yards.
