Chicago Bears nickel cornerback Kyler Gordon missed almost all of last season with nagging soft tissue injuries and has been able to perform so far in training camp because of a soft tissue injury he suffered back in the spring.
It's been quite frustrating for head coach Ben Johnson and the coaching staff, and Gordon continues to rehab while there's no timetable for his return to the practice field. With Gordon still sidelined, defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has been more focused on the players who are able to take the field, including Cam Lewis and rookie Malik Muhammad.
"I just know he’s going through the rehab process quite honestly," Allen said of Gordon. "I haven’t - that’s something that I can’t really put a lot of thought into right
now. I’ve got to focus on the guys that we have. I’m hopeful that we’ll be able to get him back sooner rather than later, and yet that’s not anything that I control, so my pure focus has been on the guys that are out there and what we’re doing with those guys."
Despite still being injured, Gordon has still been participating in a sense since he is able to attend all the meetings. Therefore, when he is able to return, he should be on the same page as everyone else as far as the scheme and play calls are concerned.
"He’s been in all of the meetings," Allen said. "He’s involved in everything that we’re doing from a meeting process standpoint but has not been involved in anything physically with the team."
His persistent injuries going back to the beginning of last year are incredibly frustrating especially since he just signed his rookie extension back in 2025 with an average salary of over $13 million a year. When someone is making that kind of money, they need to be able to play more than Gordon has.
The Bears would be able to cut or trade Gordon this year and save money toward the salary cap. So, if these injuries keep up, that may be an action to consider next offseason.
