The Chicago Bears are set to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in a prime-time showdown on Monday Night Football back at Soldier Field, looking to right the wrong of their loss this past Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. The task will be much more difficult now that quarterback Caleb Williams, and potentially backup Tyson Bagent, are both out due to various injuries. If the injury stay as such, the Bears will turn to QB3, Case Keenum.
It’ll be no easy task for the vet, as the Eagles will come in looking for revenge after the Bears big win over them in Philadelphia last season. Chicago being down potentially their top two quarterbacks gives the Eagles plenty of motivation and optimism heading into this showdown where they are likely the assumed
favorites no matter what. The Eagles offense looks much different now than the Super Bowl winning team from a few seasons ago, while their defense still has premier playmakers.
Each week here at Bears Wire, we are focusing on one player to steal and put on the Bears. This week it is cornerback, Quinyon Mitchell, although there are several options that Chicago could consider on Philly’s defense.
While Philadelphia has two very good young cornerbacks, Mitchell is a guy that undoubtedly locks in on the opposing primary receiver and shuts him down. Pairing him with Jalen Johnson would give Chicago two incredible shutdown cornerbacks, making life very difficult for any opposition. Last season, Mitchell led NFL cornerbacks in average target separation at 1.8 yards, showcasing his ability to stay attached to his wide receiver matchup, no matter what.
There has long been a conversation for Chicago’s need to boost their secondary, on top of their pass rush situation, and on offense, the left tackle. Getting a young player in Quinyon Mitchell would not only boost the team's secondary, but give them an identity that they have severely been lacking, whether that be due to injury or lack of production.
Chicago’s defense needs to be built one level at a time, Mitchell could learn a lot from Johnson, while the former could help make Johnson’s life considerably more easier, given their unique skill sets and traits.
Right now, the Bears are led by Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson, who has a hamstring injury going into week three against Philadelphia, showcasing a bigger urge if Chicago could land Mitchell on their roster.
