Being around Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson and quarterback Caleb Williams has been really good for backup quarterback Tyson Bagent. He put on a clinic in the Bears’ preseason finale against the Tennessee Titans with more touchdown passes than incompletions and a nearly perfect quarterback rating.
Bagent’s first play of the game was a pass to rookie wide receiver Zavion Thomas that Thomas took to the house for a 97-yard touchdown. It was Thomas’ first appearance in an NFL game and his first catch. The significance of this catch was not lost on Bagent who said the play was a real confidence boost for the team.
"I think that was the first play in the NFL for Zavion Thomas, greatest start in NFL history! Huge confidence boost," Bagent said.
"Coming off the first preseason game, the focal point for myself was to not go three-and-out two consecutive times. Being able to get off to a good start, execute well, and overcome penalties early on showed we were moving in the right direction."
Thomas made several other plays throughout the game en route to Chicago’s 24-15 victory versus the Titans. While many people thought the Bears took Thomas too high when they chose him in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, he proved all of the doubters wrong in this game.
His involvement in the Bears’ offense in the regular season remains to be seen. But if this game is any indicator, he is going to have some explosive plays in the NFL this season.
