Chicago Bears wide receiver Luther Burden III isn't just expected to take the next step as a receiver within the organization; he's a player widely expected across the league to establish himself among the upper tier names at the position by the end of the 2026 season.
Burden played 15 games in 2025, posting 47 receptions (60 targets), 652 receiving yards, and a pair of touchdowns. He added another six receptions and 66 yards in the team's two playoff games. His 7.1 yards-after-catch (per reception) in the regular season was tops among the team's receivers in 2025.
The projected growth of Burden in Year 2 is part of the reason the Bears felt comfortable sending D.J. Moore to the Buffalo Bills in a trade at the top of the offseason. Burden offers
that type of dynamic presence to be deployed as a receiver or, on occasion, as a runner out of the backfield, with his 4.4 speed holding the potential of catapulting him up the ranks of the league's receivers. The speed factor is particularly noteworthy, given Burden's comfort ahead of Year 2.
“I feel a lot more comfortable,” Burden said. “And I feel like it’s going to show up because I will be able to just go out there and play; play fast and not worry about anything else but going out there and playing fast.”
But it's not just the speed. While that component of his game represents the most notable asset in his skill set, he's also part of a broader mix of exciting skill position players.
“It’s very fun to have a lot of weapons around me,” Burden said. “A lot of guys can go out there and make all types of plays. It’s going to be fun to watch.”
Even with the expectations of a Year 2 jump in play, Burden isn't in a position where he has to be the guy. The fact that the Bears have multiple options for Caleb Williams in the pass game should help to open up Burden to plenty of opportunity to put his speed to work in generating explosive plays. That's likely part of the comfort he's expressing, with that blend of various skill sets throughout the offense easing a bit of pressure, in addition to the organic comfort of entering his sophomore campaign.
Of course, it's not as if the pressure is entirely absent. With Rome Odunze's health in question, Burden may end up, in fact, being the guy at receiver on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. If Odunze ends up forced to sit, it'll be a good opportunity for Burden to have a clear lane in which to showcase that comfort from the jump.
