Before last week's game against the Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams met with NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees, who gave the former No. 1 pick strategic advice to improve his completion percentage.
That advice from Brees, which came in their production meeting during game week, was Brees telling Williams that, if he increases his completions by three each week in every game, he will see the rise in completion percentage that many critics are looking for.
Bears head coach Ben Johnson heard that advice that his young quarterback received and believed it helped lead the franchise star to have a standout performance in Week 1, where he finished with a 72% completion percentage. Johnson said he believes that advice will
stick with Williams moving forward.
"You turn on our tape and that (Brees' advice), might've stuck with our guy a little bit, which was cool to see," Johnson said. "A couple checkdowns to the backs, a couple times were the primary wasn't there and you can see him reset to the middle of the field. I thought he had some really nice throwing lanes, smart with the football, and I think what showed up was on the scramble, we had a lot more production than what we may have had in the past."
Coming into his third season in the NFL, the biggest criticism of Williams has been his low completion percentage despite the fact he’s able to come up clutch in close games, where he led an NFL record seven fourth-quarter comebacks last season. The advice from Brees is simple but could end up being some of the biggest advice for Williams in his entire career.
