The Chicago Bears had an embarrassing showing against the Green Bay Packers in a 31-7 loss at Lambeau Field, where offense, defense, special teams and coaching all played a role in the loss.
One of the most frustrating aspects of the loss was the play of backup quarterback Tyson Bagent, who got the start in place of an injured Caleb Williams. Bagent, who looked rocky in a Week 4 win over the New York Jets, never got into a rhythm against the Packers, which prompted questions about why Ben Johnson didn't consider switching to third-string QB Case Keenum.
Bagent was eventually benched after his second interception at the end of the third quarter, and Keenum stepped in when the game was already out of hand. After the game, Johnson explained the decision
to bench Bagent and turn to Keenum.
"Yeah, we just wanted a little spark there," Johnson said. "Tyson, just could never feel like he got in a rhythm here today, so we'll look at why that was the case, and the second interception happened and we just felt like let's give Case a chance out there and see if we get different results."
Keenum didn't fare much better than Bagent, but the game was already out of hand with Chicago trailing 31-7. Keenum finished 11-of-19 for 108 yards and one interception, a costly one on fourth-and-goal from the 9-yard line on his first series. Bagent finished 12-of-21 for 87 yards and two interceptions.
The Bears have gone 2-1 without Williams at quarterback, and there's optimism that Williams will finally make his return to the lineup in a Week 6 game against the Atlanta Falcons next Sunday. If that's the case, it would be a big boost for the offense as Chicago looks to get back on track after this discouraging loss.
