The Chicago Bears were back at training camp on Sunday for their 10th practice of the summer, and there was plenty to break down from Day 10, including the performance of quarterback Caleb Williams.
Williams is entering his third season following a breakout sophomore campaign where he set a franchise single-season passing record, led an NFL record seven fourth quarter comebacks (including the postseason) while leading Chicago to an 11-6 record, NFC North title and playoff win. That was all in one season with head coach Ben Johnson. Now, all eyes are on Williams this summer as he continues to develop under Johnson and make a huge leap in Year 3.
We’re taking a look at the good, the bad and the noteworthy with Williams from the 10th practice of
Bears training camp:
The Good
It was a mixed day for Williams and the starting offense on the fifth day in pads, but he did have his moments. According to Bear Report, Williams had some nice completions to tight end Colston Loveland and running back Kyle Monangai on situational periods that included fourth-and-10 and third-and-9, respectively, as well as a completion to tight end Cole Kmet on a fourth-and-5. But Williams' best completion came at the end of practice when he connected with receiver Jahdae Walker for an impressive touchdown (more on that below). Williams also bested rookie cornerback Malik Muhammad on a scramble after Muhammad got locked up with D'Andre Swift and didn't see Williams going by him. "It was a LONG gain for the quarterback who went down the left sideline."
The Bad
For the first time this summer, Williams threw multiple interceptions during practice. According to Bear Report, Williams was picked off by cornerback Tyrique Stevenson (for the third time this summer) during a team drill. Meanwhile, new veteran safety Xavier Woods intercepted Williams on a long Hail Mary attempt. Overall for the offense, there were some issues lining up. Bear Report noted that there was a sequence where Chicago committed two false starts on consecutive plays -- first by both tight end Colston Loveland and left tackle Kiran Amegadjie and the second on right guard Jonah Jackson.
The Noteworthy
With Luther Burden sidelined with a groin injury, there are opportunities for younger receivers to step up, including last year's undrafted rookie Jahdae Walker, who had a touchdown grab on fourth down in the first win over the Green Bay Packers last season. Walker was on the receiving end of Williams' best throw of the day on Sunday, according to Bear Report. "The best play from Caleb Williams today was a long throw to Jahdae Walker for 60 yards and a touchdown. The defense sent an all-out blitz, and Williams was able to read the pressure and find his receiver wide open."
