Part of what made the Chicago Bears so fun to watch last season was quarterback Caleb Williams’ ability to create explosive plays through the air and on the ground. That is a part of his game Williams takes pride in and head coach Ben Johnson’s offense is perfectly tailored to that aspect of his game.
Williams took a lot of shots last season. In fact, of his 27 touchdown passes, 13 of them were over 20 yards and three of them were at least 50 yards including the game-winning touchdown to tight end Colston Loveland against the Cincinnati Bengals. Even in his rookie year, Williams was creating explosive plays as he had seven touchdown passes of at least 30 yards.
“Throughout my whole career I feel like I’ve been an explosive player, Ben gives me
the reads and where the ball should go and if there’s a shot, take it,” Williams said. “I’ve always been a shot taker.”
Despite how aggressive Williams is throwing the football, he is also incredibly strategic about it. Last year, he broke the record for the fewest interceptions for a quarterback in their first 1,000 pass attempts and only has 13 interceptions in his first two seasons in the NFL.
Chicago will be looking for Williams to be just as explosive this year as he was last season while keeping the interceptions low. The Bears are also looking for Williams to increase his completion percentage after completing only 58.1 percent of his passes in 2025; that was a 4.4 percent decrease from 2024. That is also something the wide receivers can contribute to since Chicago had problems with drops last season.
The Bears’ start their season against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday and will be looking to be back-to-back NFC North champions for the first time since the 2005 and 2006 seasons.
