Following the departure of veteran wide receiver DJ Moore this offseason, the Chicago Bears turn to young players like Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III to step up to the challenge and take over as the leaders of the receiving room.
While Odunze is projected to be the No. 1 receiver for quarterback Caleb Williams heading into 2026, that might not last long if Burden has anything to say about it. He's coming off a phenomenal rookie year and is only going to get better from here. Burden, a former second-round pick, has shown the potential to be a star in his own right.
Heading into training camp, Burden has a chance to take the mantle of the top receiver on the Bears. And listening to general manager Ryan Poles talk about his excitement with Burden,
it's hard not to imagine the young wideout is poised for a breakout year.
"If there’s a guy that I’m really excited about, it’s Luther Burden, just because of how much he’s grown from the day he walked in this building," Poles said. "I mean, I heard he was just texting and calling these quarterbacks, just looking for an arm to throw to him every day of the week. The guy loves football; he’s passionate about it. He wants to help this team win, and he wants to be the absolute best receiver he can possibly be. You can feel the fire inside of him, and I’m excited to see that show up."
One thing, according to Poles, that Burden has more than most of his teammates is the desire to be even better than the best. He's putting in the extra work needed to reach those heights. Loving football and having the desire to be great to match talent goes a long way. Being naturally good can only get you so far.
Williams has had similar things said about him, which makes you wonder if they can go on to be one of the best quarterback/receiver combos in the history of the franchise. There's a long training camp ahead for them to truly evaluate Burden and others, but these comments are encouraging.
