Chicago Bears right tackle Darnell Wright has established himself as one of the NFL's best offensive tackles in his first three seasons in the league.
In their most recent rankings of the best tackles, Pro Football Focus ranked Wright at No. 15. This ranking seems to be based more on his penalty history than his performance in run blocking and pass protection, especially after Wright was ranked as the sixth best tackle in the NFL among league executives and coaches in a poll by ESPN.
Wright has become one of the NFL’s best and most durable right tackles during his first three years in Chicago. He clearly took a liking to Ben Johnson’s offense, as he placed 11th among qualified tackles with an 82.7 PFF run-blocking grade last season. Wright also
allowed a career-low three sacks across 18 appearances, postseason included. One of the few flaws in his profile is the fact that he has committed 31 penalties in his three NFL seasons, including 12 in 2026.
Penalties have been an issue for Wright throughout his career. But, penalties are something you can come back from during a game while there is no replacement for availability. Wright has only missed two games in three years whereas other players that rank above Wright have missed more time such as Zach Tom with the Green Bay Packers, who missed five games last season and had a worse PFF run-blocking grade.
This analysis from PFF is clearly not in line with how the Bears value Wright given they gave him a four-year, $116 million contract to make him the second-highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL. Another testament to how much Chicago values Wright is how often they ran to the right side of the offensive line last season. The Bears were very comfortable running toward Wright’s side because he performed so well in run blocking.
Wright is among the best right tackles in the NFL. PFF may not see him that way, but the Bears clearly do. He will be a key part of this offense throughout the season in both the run game and the pass game.
