The Chicago Bears haven’t had much on-field production from cornerback Kyler Gordon lately. It isn’t for a lack of trying or playing well. It's simply because he hasn’t been available. Injuries have kept him to limited reps over his entire career, but it's become a significant issue over the past couple of years.
After playing in just three regular season games last year, Gordon was hoping to come back in 2026 strong, but it doesn’t seem like that’s going to be the case. Ahead of training camp, the Bears put him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
On Tuesday, general manager Ryan Poles sounded off on Gordon's injury situation, which he confirmed is a calf injury, and it's clear that there's plenty of frustration.
"Obviously, he's frustrated,”
Poles said. “We're frustrated. Everybody here is putting their time and effort into getting him back."
This doesn’t sound like a GM who is prepared to have the player ready to go any time soon. It also sounds like it has been a recurring issue for Gordon and the organization.
Poles confirmed that it won't be a smooth transition back into the lineup for Gordon when he returns. Assuming he is fully healthy at any point, Gordon will have to "earn the trust" of the coaching staff back. You'd think that it won't be difficult for Gordon to do that because he's a good player. However, the NFL can pass a player by quickly.
Is this going to be an issue throughout training camp that bleeds into the season? Only time will tell, but this does not appear to be a positive development.
Head coach Ben Johnson had a simple message to Gordon as he deals with this injury struggle.
"Get healthy."
