Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams spoke for the first time in nearly a month and had plenty to say about his hamstring injury and status for Sunday's Week 6 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
Williams, who was a full participant during Thursday's practice up at Halas Hall, met with the media and immediately set the record straight regarding his playing status. "Before you start asking, I do not know if I'm playing yet," Williams said via ESPN's Courtney Cronin upon taking the podium. Williams went on to say he needs to pass a stress test to determine whether or not he's ready to return against the Falcons.
As for the injury itself, the Bears quarterback provided a little more clarity on that as well. Williams said he suffered a hamstring
tear in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings but declined to share the grade when asked. "It was a hamstring tear and a pretty serious one. We got a grade, but I wouldn't say it deserves to be put out there after all the false [reports]. Williams took exception to the various reports immediately after his injury that were not accurate, according to him.
While Williams' status is still up in the air, there is plenty of optimism to suggest he will return Sunday after missing the last three games. He returned to practice last week and got his first full session in on Thursday, all of which are positive signs. The Bears managed to go 2-1 during his absence, behind Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent, with wins over the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets and a loss to the Green Bay Packers. Now facing a potent Falcons offense, they will need all the help they can get to keep up on offense. Williams' status should become clear Friday or Saturday.
