Lions head coach Dan Campbell announced on Monday that safety Avonte Maddox will miss the remainder of the 2026 season after
"Maddox is going to require surgery. It looks like he'll be out for the season. That hurts a little bit. Maddox is a good player for us. Good, solid football player. I hate that for him. That's the hand we're dealt, and we move forward," Campbell said.

Maddox exited early in the second quarter against the Bills with a foot injury. Campbell said after the Lions' 41-31 loss at Buffalo that he was "nervous" about Maddox's injury status.
"I don't know. Maddox is pretty tough, and so when he doesn't come back, that makes
me nervous. But I won't know until tomorrow for sure," Campbell said after the Lions' loss at the Bills.
Now, Campbell and the Lions' fears were confirmed.
Maddox, 30, started each of the first two games for the Lions. The 5-foot-9, 191-pound defensive back totaled 10 tackles and a pair of passes defended in Detroit's first two games.
In his career, Maddox has registered 312 tackles, 42 passes defended, nine forced fumbles, and five interceptions.
On the heels of the Maddox injury, Detroit is working out a group of defensive backs on Monday. After Maddox's injury, Thomas Harper logged 33 snaps alongside the Lions' other starting safety, Chuck Clark.
