The Detroit Lions expect to get another key player back into practice this week.
Center Cade Mays, the Lions' top free agent signing this past offseason, is expected to return to practice this week ahead of Detroit's Week 5 date at the Arizona Cardinals.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell shared the injury update on Tuesday during his appearance on "Costa and Jansen" on 97.1 The Ticket.
"He's doing great. He and (Brian) Branch are on the same plan right now. The plan is to get them worked into practice. We're waiting on the final call from the doctor on both to say, 'Yes, they can practice.' We'd love to get them going this week. Doesn't mean they're going to play," Campbell said of Mays.
Mays suffered a broken right wrist in training camp, landing him
on injured reserve with a designation to return entering the season. Campbell said previously that the Lions' goal was to have Mays available after its bye week, which is in Week 6 after this upcoming date at Arizona.
Mays appears to be right on schedule with the initial return timeline reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapaport back in August.
In March, the Lions signed Mays to a three-year, $25 million deal that includes $14 million guaranteed. Mays has played in 52 games and started 27. Last season, Mays didn't give up a sack over 726 snaps and had a 94.3% run block win rate.
Like Mays, Campbell told reporters on Monday that safety Brian Branch is expected to make a return to practice this week.
"I'm hopeful (Branch will practice this week). We have not gotten confirmation from the doctor yet. That's the only thing we're waiting for. I think it looks really good that he's going to practice this week," Campbell said.
