After a 32-26 Week 4 loss at the Carolina Panthers from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. on "Sunday Night Football," Detroit Lions fans vented their frustration with the team's porous defense and general manager Brad Holmes' inability to bolster the struggling secondary.
While Jared Goff put up a staggering 412 passing yards on 32 for 52 passes and one touchdown, the Lions' abysmal defense put tremendous pressure on Goff and the Lions' offense to score, which eventually disrupted their rhythm.
Panthers quarterback Bryce Young was sensational, completing 29 of 41 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns. The bulk of that was to second-year wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan, who recorded two scores alongside career-highs in receptions (14)
and yards (192). Carolina's other two touchdowns came from Chuba Hubbard as he rushed for 122 yards.
Per ESPN research, the last time Detroit's defense allowed at least 30 or more points in three of its first four games was in 2008, during the Lions' 0-16 season. Through four games, Detroit ranks last in the NFL in both passing defense and scoring defense.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 2-2 on the season.
Here's some of the social media reactions to Detroit's defensive performance against Carolina on Sunday night:
Collinsworth just said “here’s the problem with the Lions, they’re bad at zone and they’re bad at man” which is a nice spin on calling a defense the worst thing in human history

Free-agent defensive coach Jim Schwartz was the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator from 2016-18, when current Lions Vice President of Player Personnel Dwayne Joseph was the team’s Director of Pro Scouting.

It’s worth picking up the phone to bring Schwartz back to Detroit…

Not at all. I'd rather have a 2nd round pick two years from now.
Take an ice pick and jam it in my retina. #OnePride
You aren’t good enough to line up and show the other team what you are doing.

Show man, drop into zone.
Show zone, go to man.
Show blitz, drop.
Show coverage, blitz.
You don’t have the players to line up and win 1v1 right now. https://t.co/SlSB466vHJ
