Per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit Lions are signing safety Bishop Fitzgerald off the Pittsburgh Steelers' practice squad.

Fitzgerald, 23, is a 5-foot-11, 201-pound rookie safety out of USC that initially signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans. After the Titans waived Fitzgerald in its 53-man roster cuts, the Steelers scooped Fitzgerald up for their practice squad

Fitzgerald was a first-team All-American last year at USC by the Associated Press, Walter Camp, and by the Football Writers Association of America. A USC transfer from NC State, Fitzgerald finished the regular

season leading the Big Ten and ranking second nationally with five interceptions.

Fitzgerald was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award and the Lott IMPACT Trophy as he tallied 51 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, three pass breakups and one sack.
