In his Tuesday radio appearance on 97.1 The Ticket's "Costa and Jansen with Heather," Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked for an update on safety Kerby Joseph's progress. Campbell said Joseph won't play this week for the Lions at the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
"Kerby will be in practice this week. We're going to try to give him some scout team reps. He's not going to play this game. So, I know that was coming. He's not playing versus Miami. He's just going to get some reps in practice," Campbell said of Joseph.
The Lions opened Joseph's 21-day practice window last Wednesday on Oct. 28. The 6-foot, 210-pound All-Pro safety has been rehabbing a cartilage issue in his knee.
Joseph last played in an NFL game on Oct. 12, 2025, against the Kansas
City Chiefs.
A third-round pick in 2022 out of Illinois, Joseph led the NFL in interceptions during the 2024 season with nine picks. In his career, Joseph has played in 55 games and started 52, totaling 20 interceptions, 35 passes defensed, 265 tackles, two tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits.
Campbell shared several other injury updates as well, saying that Detroit is preparing as though Juice Scruggs may start at center with starting center Cade Mays banged up again.
"Look, Cade has got this ankle right now. What I would say is that Juice came in and played very well. That's what I would definitely say. Juice, he took the mental reps this week. He got a couple live, but really it was more of the mental (reps) at center. To get thrust back in there against that defense with everything they were doing and to have the production, it was impressive and he was locked in. He was so ready to go.
"I've told you this before. We love Juice. He just fits us and he's all about business. He's a great teammate, he's high energy. He tries to finish plays, runs off the football. So, he did a heck of a job. As of right now, he's our guy, because I don't see Cade practicing Wednesday and he might not Thursday. So, we're going to get Juice ready to go here," Campbell said.
Safety Brian Branch and EDGE DJ Wonnum remain in concussion protocol, starting cornerback D.J. Reed has a hip injury, and running back Jacob Saylors left Sunday's game with a neck injury.
"BB and Wonnum, they're in concussion protocol, so we won't know. We'll know where we're at in Phase 1 of this thing today, or later this afternoon. Reed's got a hip. There again, it doesn't look good for him on Wednesday for sure. Until I can get more on that, I don't see where he's at... I don't see Saylors on Wednesday.
"That's kind of where we're at. We did, we took a little bit of a hit here. We knew it was coming. I mean, it's fortunate we got this far. So, that's the good news. We actually got a little bit further this time, and we'll adjust. We've got plenty of guys. We've got football players, and we'll adjust," Campbell said.
