It was never truly competitive for Detroit during a forgettable appearance on "Thursday Night Football" in Buffalo. Josh Allen and the Bills handled the Lions, 41-31, in a prime-time matchup that lacked any real suspense.
Since taking a 21-0 lead over the New Orleans Saints
in the second half of its Week 1 win, Detroit has surrendered 71 points, leaving Kelvin Sheppard's defense searching for answers.The Lions entered Thursday without safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph for at least the first four weeks of the season. Detroit's injury situation only got worse. Avonte Maddox limped off field in the second quarter and was carted to the locker room, making an already-decimated secondary thinner.
Amon-Ra St. Brown was one of Detroit's few bright
spots. The two-time first-team All-Pro kept drives alive, had another multi-touchdown night and was in sync with Jared Goff. After a quiet first half, he took over the passing attack in the second half.
As the Lions (1-1) look to bounce back from their first defeat, here's some immediate overreactions from Detroit's Week 2 loss at Buffalo:
Lions are doomed if they can't get pressure with blitz
The Lions blitzed Josh Allen on 55.3% of his dropbacks in Week 2, their highest rate under DC Kelvin Sheppard.

If the Lions can't get home with the blitz, this team is in trouble. Look no further than Thursday night.
A blitz felt like the Lions' only chance to slow down Buffalo. And it didn't work. Josh Allen finished his night 12 of 17 passing for 137 yards and two touchdowns against Detroit blitzes. That's especially concerning for a defense asking an injury-riddled secondary to survive without consistent help from the pass rush.
A major miscommunication midway through the first quarter resulted in a wide-open Buffalo touchdown. Later in the first half, Rock Ya-Sin's holding penalty negated a red-zone interception that could have kept the deficit to two scores.
The Lions dialed up pressure packages throughout the game, but rarely made Allen uncomfortable. The reigning MVP routinely identified where pressure was coming from and found receivers operating in free space.
Detroit's first meaningful stop didn't come until 8:27 left in the fourth quarter. And that was thanks to a Bills third-down drop.
The offensive line isn't getting better anytime soon
For all the concern surrounding Detroit's defense, the offensive line isn't providing much reason for optimism either. Goff spent much of the night under duress before Buffalo eventually shifted toward softer, more conservative coverage. Several passes were tipped at the line of scrimmage, and Detroit struggled to consistently give its quarterback a clean platform.
The Lions' offense is built on timing, play-action and allowing Goff to distribute standing tall in the pocket. When protection breaks down, everything becomes more difficult and predictable. Unless someone emerges alongside Penei Sewell, this could be an issue Detroit is forced to scheme around all season.
Though Goff passed for 327 yards and four touchdowns, Goff was sacked four times.
Drew Petzing has made Jameson Williams an afterthought
The Lions gave Jameson Williams a lucrative contract extension to be the explosive complement to St. Brown. However, through the first three quarters on Thursday, Williams had just one reception and felt left out of the mix. That is tough to justify if you're first-year Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing.
Williams' value has always extended beyond the box score because of his speed forcing defenses to account for him vertically. But, if he's reduced to simply a decoy and removed from the offense completely, that is counter productive.
Williams had just three catches before overtime last Sunday. That's a total of five catches in regulation through two games. Petzing doesn't need to force feed Williams targets, but he does need to find ways to make one of the team's most dangerous weapons matter.
