Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, contract talks have broken down between the Detroit Lions and star tight end Sam LaPorta.
After attempting to work out a long-term deal for the first few weeks of the season, the Lions and LaPorta have broken off contract talks. According to ESPN's report, barring a significant breakthrough, LaPorta is set to be a free agent in 2027. The Lions would have the franchise tag available.
A second-round draft pick in 2023, LaPorta burst onto the scene with a standout rookie season. LaPorta had 86 grabs for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns during his rookie campaign in 2023. Then, LaPorta hauled in 60 catches for 726 yards and seven scores in 2024.

LaPorta's 2025 campaign was cut short after just nine games as he underwent back surgery to repair a fully herniated disk. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound tight end has looked like himself to start this season, registering 14 receptions for 144 yards and a score.
In his career thus far, LaPorta has 200 receptions for 2,248 yards and 21 touchdowns.
LaPorta is represented by agent Jack Bechta, who also represents Green Bay Packers tight end Tucker Kraft. Kraft landed a four-year, $75 million contract extension prior to the season. LaPorta was a second-team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler in 2023.
