The Miami Dolphins made sweeping changes to their front office, coaching staff and roster this offseason that they hope will set them up for the sustained success that's escaped them for decades.
With the turnover to the roster, Miami lost some key veterans and important voices in their locker room, including three of their six captains from their 2025 campaign - quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, fullback Alec Ingold and linebacker Bradley Chubb.
While it's unclear how many captains the Dolphins will have in 2026 under new head coach Jeff Hafley, it's evident that there will be new players who are rewarded with captainship this year. And while some players may not be interested in the extra responsibility, one Dolphins weapon is interested in that opportunity.
"Most definitely. I mean , who doesn't want to be a captain? On game day, you got a ‘C’ on your chest, and I feel like I could be a great leader. I could be a great captain for this team, and if I get that vote, then I'm happy with that," running back De'Von Achane said.
Achane is entering his fourth season in the NFL and is coming off of his first Pro Bowl campaign after rushing for 1,350 yards and eight touchdowns on a league-leading 5.7 yards per attempt last year.
While the running back has discussed his hopes of stepping up as a leader in 2026, he knows that it can't just be those donning the 'C' making their voices heard.
"It's going to take all of us," Achane said. "It ’s not going to be just one person. We might have a couple of captains but it's not just going to be us up there, out there on that field. The young guys – it's a business and it's a league – they knew what they came into, and I feel like they're ready to play. They re hungry. No matter how old you are when you're out there in the field, I feel like they're going to perform."
The Dolphins currently have the youngest roster in the league, so they'll need their veterans to step up, but they'll also need some of their rookies to act like they've been there before. Luckily, they appear to have some of those guys.
