The Miami Dolphins have started their 2026 campaign, their first under head coach Jeff Hafley, with an 0-5 record, and the play of quarterback Malik Willis has been a big reason for their struggles.
Miami signed Willis to a three-year, $67.5 million deal to be their starting quarterback this offseason, and through five games, he's completed 56.2% of his passes for 849 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. He's also run for 186 yards and two scores, but he's fumbled five times.
With the rough start, Hafley is already fielding questions about a potential quarterback change, but he was quick to shut those down on Monday.
"No. We've played five games, and Malik is our quarterback," Hafley said. "As far as the Malik questions, again, I totally
respect all of the questions, and I get everybody has a job to do, so good question. We need to be better. Malik needs to be better, but that's not the headline. The headline is we all need to be better, and I mean that... everything in the pass game has to be better... It's the receiver, it's the tight ends, it's the protection. It all has to tie in, and it all has to be better."
Willis' backup, Kyle McCord, is even less proven than Willis is. The 2025 sixth-round pick out of Syracuse spent one year with the Philadelphia Eagles and the offseason with the Green Bay Packers before the Dolphins traded a 2028 sixth-round pick for him at the roster cut deadline.
All of McCord's snaps have come in the preseason, as he completed 55.5% of his passes for 637 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions in six exhibition contests between Philadelphia and Green Bay.
Between McCord's lack of experience and Willis' contract situation, it doesn't seem like the Dolphins will be pulling the string on the starting quarterback any time soon.
