The Miami Dolphins decided to move on from Mike McDaniel as their head coach this offseason after he led them to a 35-35 record and two playoff appearances in his four years with the team.
While Miami brought in Jeff Hafley to take his place, McDaniel signed on with the Los Angeles Chargers to be Jim Harbaugh's offensive coordinator, where he'd have the opportunity to coach former first-round pick Justin Herbert.
Things haven't gone well for McDaniel in Los Angeles, as the Chargers are winless through five weeks, and the offense has looked disjointed. In fact, they're 25th in yards per game (292.8) and 30th in points per game (16.8).
After this start, ESPN's Bill Barnwell put McDaniel at the top of his list of coaches on the hot seat entering Week
6, citing Herbert's struggles, and McDaniel's insistence on running into loaded boxes with a struggling run game.
Some believed that McDaniel's run as an offensive coordinator could be short if he found success with Los Angeles and proved that Tua Tagovailoa was the reason for the team's problems during the end of his tenure in South Florida. However, McDaniel's stay with the Chargers might not last long because they've been so bad.
It hasn't been a huge storyline in Miami because the Dolphins are also 0-5, but everyone knew that the team would be rebuilding. This is Los Angeles' window to try and go for it. Instead, both teams are in the same spot, and it's much more disappointing for McDaniel and the Chargers.
