What is the story about?
The
Miami Dolphins and Washington Commanders have a preseason meeting on Friday, but before that, they are conducting a joint practice session on Wednesday in Ashburn, Virginia.
With a few beat reporters from South Florida and Washington on the scene, we got some updates throughout the session. Here's everything that happened on the practice fields at the BigBear.ai Performance Center.
- According to the Miami Herald's Omar Kelly and c. Isaiah Smalls Il , safety Dante Trader Jr., cornerback JuJu Brents, edge rusher Clelin Ferrell, defensive lineman Zach Sieler, wide receiver Kevin Coleman Jr., offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer and tight end Ben Sims didn't participate.
- The Herald also reported that A.J. Green III was Miami's best cornerback in one-ones, but he still struggled and possibly could've been flagged on most reps. Cornerback Alex Austin also worked a the starting slot, and no one at slot for the Dolphins could defend anyone.
- The South Florida Sun-Sentinel's David Furones reported that Miami's offensive line lost the overall battle in one-on-ones with the Commanders defensive line. Aaron Brewer was the best of the group, but the rest of the starters had some tough reps. Newcomer Caedan Wallace also got beat on a rep.
- Malik Washingotn, Jalen Tolbert, Theo Wease Jr. and A.J. Henning all caught touchdowns in one-on-ones.
- In team drills, Commanders WR Antonio Williams beat Dolphins defensive back Major Burns for a 20-yard touchdown.
- Dolphins linebacker Jordyn Brooks recorded a tackle for a loss.
- Commanders WR Stefon Diggs, who Dolphins reportedly had some interest in, caught a touchdown pass in the back of the end zone.
- Dolphins safety Michael Taaffe broke up a pass.
- Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis missed wide receiver Jalen Tolbert near the goal line with Jeremy Reaves in coverage.
- Wallace gave up a sack against Commanders defneisve lineman Jar'Zhan Newton.
- Former Dolphins cornerback Rasul Douglas forced an incompletion on the final play of team red zone.
- Rookie wide receiver Caleb Douglas drew a defensive pass interference call that kept a drive alive.
- Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels beat the Dolphins secondary on multiple completions of 15-20 yards with Marco Wilson in coverage on one, and the duo of Jason Marshall Jr. and Lonnie Johnson Jr. in on other.
- The Palm Beach Post's Joe Schad reported that rookie cornerback Chris Johnson didn't practice.
- Dolphins cornerback Ethan Bonner, who Jeff Hafley prasied earlier this week, broke up a pass from Daniels to Dyami Brown.
- Commanders running back Rachaad White got around the left side for a big gain after the Dolphins fail to set the edge.
- Commanders tight end Chig Okonkwo got open up the seem between Dolphins defenders Miles Battle and Major Burns.
- On the first play of a new team period, Daniels hit Treylon Burks for a 70-yard touchdown with Zayne Anderson and Michael Taaffe in coverage.
- Quinn Ewers connected with Henning for a 25-yard gain.
- Dolphins kicker Riley Patterson, who has won the competition by default with Zane Gonzalez landing on IR, nailed a 37-yard attempt.
- Willis missed fullback D.J. Herman, which resulted in a failed third-and-1 attempt.
- Willis threw a pick-six to cornerback Mike Sainristil.
- Taaffe broke up a pass to Luke McCaffrey in the back of the end zone as time expired.
- Furones noted that linebacker Jacob Rodriguez made some plays in run defense.
- On the final two-minute situation, Willis reportedly hit Doulas for a gain, but there was a penalty on the next play. Commanders cornerback Amik Robertson broke up a pass to Malik Washington before Charles Snowden sacked Willis.
