The Miami Dolphins remained out on the West Coast this week after they lost to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1. On Sunday, they met the San Francisco 49ers for an interconference battle at Levi's Stadium and fell 35-13.
It was evident early that San Francisco was the much more talented team, as they scored touchdowns on their first five possessions on Sunday, with Brock Purdy throwing two and running in one, and Christian McCaffrey running in a pair himself.
Miami's defense couldn't do anything to slow down Purdy's passing attack, as the former seventh-round pick finished the day completing 20-of-22 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns with a remarkable 149.1 passer rating. They were doing that without Ricky Pearsall, Christian Kirk and De'Zhaun
Stribling, who are all on injured reserve.
The defense did a bit better against the run, holding McCaffrey, Kaelon Black and Jordan James to just 63 yards on 3.0 yards per attempt. Both of McCaffrey's touchdown runs came from just a yard out.
Offensively, Miami's offensive line, once again, had trouble protecting Malik Willis. The quarterback was sacked four times and seemed to be under fire on almost every dropback. They also didn't help much in the running game, as De'Von Achane, Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon II combined for 92 yards on 3.7 yards per carry.
The Dolphins trio of rookie wide receivers were rather quiet as well, as Caleb Douglas had two receptions for 19 yards (and left the game with an injury), Chris Bell was targeted once and Kevin Coleman Jr. wasn't thrown to at all.
Continuing on the negative trend, the special teams woes were apparent again this week, as Riley Patterson missed a 51-yard field goal attempt, and punter Bradley Pinion fumbled on a punt attempt that gave San Francisco incredible field position.
The Dolphins will probably have the worse roster in most matchups this year, but they need to clean up the costly, dumb mistakes that they've made through the first two weeks of their 2026 campaign. If they don't this could be the first 0-17 season for any team.
