With news that the Miami Dolphins are reportedly signing kicker Zane Gonzalez, it should come as no surprise that ESPN's Adam Schefter has reported that they're releasing kicker Riley Patterson to open up the spot on the 53-man roster.
Patterson has made 7-of-9 field goals (77.8%) and 5-of-6 extra points (83.3%) this year, and the coaching staff hasn't been thrilled with his efforts on kickoffs either. Gonzalez, the 10-year veteran, will take his place after recovering from the injury that landed him on injured reserve in training camp.
Interestingly enough, Patterson isn't the only player that the Dolphins are releasing, as the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson reported that the team is cutting cornerback Storm Duck from the PUP list.
Duck joined the
Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2024 after playing at North Carolina, where he earned All-ACC honors once, and Louisville. In two years in Miami, he appeared in 16 games and recorded 37 tackles and five passes defensed.
The 25-year-old started the season on the PUP list after suffering a season-ending knee injury last year. While he returned to practice, Miami would've had to activate him this week, and it's clear they don't want to cut anyone else to open the roster spot for him.
He could return at some point, if the math changes.
