The Miami Dolphins pared their roster down to 53 players over the weekend and then had to sign a bunch to their practice squad on Monday.
On Tuesday, Miami made changes to their practice squad, which included releasing quarterback Mark Gronowski, tight end Jeremiah Franklin and linebacker Cam Riley. They also added several players, including defensive lineman Mazi Smith.
Smith played at Michigan from 2019-22, earning All-Big Ten honors in his final season with the Wolverines. After his collegiate career, the Dallas Cowboys took him in the first round (No. 26 overall) of the 2023 NFL draft.
The 25-year-old spent 2.5 seasons with the Cowboys, but in the middle of the 2025 season, they sent him to the New York Jets as part of the package to acquire
Quinnen Williams.
In 39 games over his three years in the league, Smith has recorded 57 tackles, six quarterback hits and two sacks.
Miami has some talented players in their defensive line room, but with Kenneth Grant on injured reserve and Zach Sieler recovering from an injury, it's nice to have the extra depth. The signing also gives the Dolphins the chance to take a flier on a former top pick and see if they can get something out of him.
On top of Smith, Miami also added defensive end Max Llewellyn, cornerback Ethan Bonner, linebacker Liam Anderson, defensive end Clellin Ferrell, defensive end Amari Gainer, defensive lineman Jordan Miller, wide receiver Will Sheppard, cornerback Jaylin Simpson and tight end Tre Watson to their practice squad.
