Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. looked a bit shaky in his first drive of the season against the Green Bay Packers back in Week 3. After a couple of misses and an interception, Penix settled in and played marvelously.
In fact, he hasn't thrown a single interception since and he's now up to nine touchdown passes on the season to go with just that one pick. Along the way, Penix has risen into the top-10 in several advanced stats.
Now Penix is approaching a streak by Falcons football boss Matt Ryan. According to ESPN, if Penix throws multiple touchdown passes today without a pick he'll match Ryan's streak of five straight games doing so back in 2018.
"Penix has had four straight games with passing touchdowns and no interceptions, tied
for the longest streak by a Falcon since Matt Ryan (five) in 2018 (Penix also had four straight last season)."
Most of Penix's good work has come against man defense, but last week he proved he can beat heavy zone defenses, as well. Now Penix will face a different challenge against the most-aggressive defense that the Falcons have played so far this season.
Going into today's game the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the fifth-highest blitz rate in the league.
If Penix can keep his streak going and dominate against Todd Bowles' blitz package, defensive play-callers are going to have a really tough time coming up with ways to throw him off his game.
