The Atlanta Falcons kept four quarterbacks on their initial 53-man roster, but we still don't know which player will start Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team is running out of time to make a decision, with less than two weeks until the 2026 season opener.
Falcons general manager Ian Cunningham met with the media on Wednesday and was asked all about the quarterback competition, including whose decision it would ultimately be to name the Week 1 starter.
"We all talk about it. We've all been talking about it forever," Cunningham responded. "So at the end of the day, we'll make the decision. And when it's time to make the decision, we'll let you know."
When asked whether or not Penix would be ready for Week 1, the first-year Falcons GM
didn't rule it out.
"For him to be where he's at, it shows because he's been working his tail off to get to this point," said Cunningham. "And our staff putting a really good plan together for him to get to the point of 11-on-11 to where we're having these conversations where - who's going to be the starting quarterback, and is he going to be ready - it goes to show you he's put himself in that position because of the work that he's put in."
Cunningham was also asked if all four quarterbacks were in the mix for the team's starting quarterback job.
"I can't answer that," answered Cunningham.
It sounds like the fans are just going to have to keep waiting. The Falcons will kick off the regular season on the road against the Steelers on September 13.
