It's difficult to imagine a more inauspicious start for the Atlanta Falcons at training camp on Wednesday. Not only were the team's top two options at quarterback not available due to injuries, their projected new starting right tackle started camp on the PUP list and star running back Bijan Robinson did not participate.
The good news is that Robinson is not injured. The bad news is thataccording to Josh Kendall at The Athletic, he's holding out in hopes of getting a new contract, as Drake London and Kyle Pitts have gotten this offseason. However, since Robinson still showed up for practice, it was technically more of a "hold in" than a hold out.
"The issues weren’t confined to the quarterback room. Running back Bijan Robinson did not practice,
and the team source said it was due to a contract-related issue. The Falcons and Robinson have been discussing a second contract this offseason, and the deal still is more likely than not to get done, but his absence wasn’t a positive note."
Bijan Robinson is the best running back on the planet right now, and when he signs his new contract, he's practically guaranteed to become the highest-paid back in the NFL. Anything less would be an insult to his talent.
Getting London and Pitts re-signed were good moves by Matt Ryan, but the most-critical piece of the puzzle is Robinson, who should also be the easiest to re-up with a new contract.
According to Falcons reporter Maria Martin, Robinson is sitting out of practice again on Thursday (see below). Hopefully this impasse will end soon with the announcement of a massive new deal for No. 7.
