The New England Patriots should seriously consider pursuing a trade for Los Angeles Chargers star edge rusher Khalil Mack before the NFL trade deadline.
Mack is exactly who the Patriots need to provide their defense with a significant boost as the team looks to wage a successful Super Bowl run this year. Even at 35 years old, the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year has shown that he is still capable of making an impact and contributing at a high level.
The Florida native has three sacks, six quarterback hits and five tackles for a loss this year. However, the former nine-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro brings more to the table than just what's seen on the stat sheet. His leadership as a longtime NFL veteran, along with his ability to pressure
opposing quarterbacks, disrupt offensive game plans and make plays in crucial situations would be a huge lift on defense.
The Patriots are still missing their leading pass-rusher from last season, Harold Landry III. Veteran edge rusher Dre'Mont Jones has also been banged up throughout the season. The team has leaned heavily on rookie Gabe Jacas and second-year defender Elijah Ponder to step up at the position.
New England could benefit greatly from adding another veteran piece to the mix to help set the tone for the younger players. Given the fact that the Patriots are serious contenders, trading for a playmaker like Mack is a feasible move that wouldn't break the bank.
