Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson gave praise to New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye.
The Bears defeated the Patriots by a 30-24 margin on Thursday night, but that didn’t stop the opposing coach from giving Maye his flowers.
“He's an outstanding player. It's very hard to bottle him up," Johnson admitted to media members after the game. "You only rush four, and he finds a way if he doesn't see anything down the field to find an open gap and skirt on through. And then I think what's really impressive is how he can find these little outlets and these dumps where they're still running vertical for catch-and-run opportunities. I think they had a number of those tonight.”
Maye continued his run of impressive performances against the Bears, going
24-of-31 passing for 321 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also had four carries for 26 yards and a touchdown.
He played exceptionally well despite missing two starting offensive linemen, Alijah Vera-Tucker and Ben Brown, as well as his No. 2 wide receiver, Romeo Doubs. The Patriots have been banged up throughout the season with injuries, but the young gunslinger has continued to make the most of the pieces around him.
Unfortunately for the Patriots, it wasn't enough to come away with a victory on Thursday night. The team fell in defeat on a short week on the road against a talented Bears team.
But their quarterback played like a superstar, and that's a strong positive to take away from the game.
