The NFL trade deadline is coming up on November 10, and one surprise candidate was mentioned for the New England Patriots. ESPN’s Dan Graziano listed backup quarterback Tommy DeVito as a potential candidate to be moved at the deadline.
It's an interesting choice given the Patriots' third option is rookie Behren Morton, who doesn't have NFL experience besides playing in the preseason. DeVito, on the other hand, has started in eight games and won three of them. If disaster ever strikes, he is the best option to fill in behind Drake Maye.
Graziano wrote:
"Quarterback Tommy DeVito. I don't think the Patriots are trading players. However, DeVito is a backup quarterback with NFL starting experience, so it's not wild to think New England could get a call."
This particular move would not make a ton of sense. The Patriots' offensive line has been banged up and inconsistent, and Maye has been able to weather the storm. They are believed to be a playoff contender, and it would be a stretch to hinge those hopes on the shoulders of Morton in a worst-case scenario.
DeVito also has the benefit of being in his second year in Josh McDaniels' offense. That kind of knowledge of the system would be nearly impossible to replace at the midway point of the season.
