The New England Patriots released defensive tackle Eric Gregory in rather unexpected fashion on Sunday, particularly after he made a strong impression with the work he put forth throughout training camp.
However, on Monday, it was reported that they are bringing him back on the practice squad, per MassLive's Mark Daniels.
Gregory was active in the Patriots’ preseason rotation across all three games prior to being released. He had a quarterback hit in the preseason opener and three total tackles in the Patriots’ second matchup against the Eagles.
The veteran defensive tackle saw snaps in both run-defense and passing situations. He had some high moments that strengthened his case to be on the Patriots’ roster for the start of the upcoming season.
Gregory’s performance in camp, which spilled over onto the field in preseason game action, indicated that he had done enough to remain in the competition for a role in the Patriots’ defensive tackle unit. He'll get a continued opportunity to prove himself on the practice field for a possible call-up to join the likes of Milton Williams, Christian Barmore and Cory Durden in regular season games.
