The New England Patriots have a talented wide receiver room as presently constructed, but with A.J. Brown injured and the team off to a 1-2 start to the year, a midseason move may be necessary to strengthen the team’s offense even further.
CBS Sports’ Carter Bahns labeled the Patriots as being a team that would benefit from trading
for Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, whose presence would give New England another established option in its passing game.“Adding to the receiving unit was a priority in the offseason, and neither move is paying dividends right now,” Bahns wrote regarding the Patriots bringing in Brown and Romeo Doubs in the open market. “Things might look better once Brown returns, but even then, the Patriots might require
a more capable second option than what they already possess.”
Jeudy has had a strikingly slow start to the season. Through four games, he’s only recorded 62 receiving yards on five receptions. He appears to be a player that the Patriots might be able to pursue based on his current status behind several receivers in the Browns’ offense. His otherwise lengthy history of consistent production as a secondary wide receiver in the league makes a trade for him justifiable.
Jeudy recorded 50 catches for 602 yards and two touchdowns in 2025 and had a career year in 2024, when he posted 90 receptions for 1,229 yards and four touchdowns.
The Patriots have yet to see their full receiving corps in action for an entire game this season. Brown’s stint on injured reserve has not written him off as being a player incapable of being the team’s No. 1 receiver, and a prolific one at that. Doubs’ up-and-down start to the year has still seen him put up numbers in Week 2 — 96 receiving yards on three receptions — that run consistent with how he’s expected to perform in 2026. And Mack Hollins has looked the part of an ideal WR3.
However, that does not negate the fact that Jeudy has the resume and the talent to form a unit of four top-caliber players, respective of their roles, in New England alongside those three stars.
A potential deal will depend on Cleveland’s willingness to move Jeudy, as well as New England’s evaluation of what they’ll need to give up in a trade. Still, having another receiver with WR2 upside in a four-man unit may take the team over the top in the Super Bowl race this year.
