New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez agreed to a record-setting extension late Monday night, netting him a four-year, $135 million deal, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
The contract negotiations have been one of the top Patriots storylines throughout the offseason. Seattle Seahawks All-Pro corner Devon Witherspoon set the benchmark with his historic contract extension in August, and Gonzalez kicked things up a notch with a record-breaking deal of his own, including a reported $102 million in guaranteed money.
The deal comes on the heels of another strong season for Gonzalez. All told, the star corner recorded 69 tackles and 10 passes defended in 14 games.
His play in the postseason further solidified his reputation as one
of the top corners in the NFL. He secured the interception to seal the victory over the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game, and he also helped hold reigning Offensive Player of the Year, Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, to only four catches for 27 yards at Super Bowl LX.
