New England Patriots safety and special teams captain Brenden Schooler will begin the 2026 NFL season on the NFI/reserve list, according to the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed. That will keep him sidelined for at least the first four weeks of the year.
Schooler has an undisclosed injury that is keeping him out for the beginning of the season. He was placed on the NFI list back in July and will continue with that status heading into the upcoming 17-game slate.
The 29-year-old Schooler has played for the Patriots for all four seasons of his career from 2022-25. He most recently recorded 19 total tackles in 2025. Schooler’s career year came in 2024, where he recorded two sacks, two tackles for loss and three quarterback hits across 17 games played for New
England. He was also named a first-team All-Pro as a special teams player.
Schooler also tied his career high for special teams tackles last season with 14. He added six special teams tackles in the playoffs last season.
