FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – During his rookie season, Drake Maye certainly impressed. But it was his second season in the league when he truly emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in the league, finishing the year by leading the New England Patriots to the Super Bowl and being the MVP runner-up.
He put the league on notice, and now, going into his third year, many expect him to be even better. But has he put any thought into a potential Year 3 leap?
"Yeah, I am maybe not really focused on that, hoping we win some games," he told reporters on Saturday. "I think the more that I can, myself, put the offense into good plays and make plays and score plays with how much confidence I have in our defense, I think we will be on the right side of a lot of games.
"So, I think more Year 3 leap and Year 2 leap, I am focused on leaping each and every day and trying to get better," he added. "How can I get better? And the more you get better each and every day, I feel like whatever you guys call a leap, whatever happens, happens. So I think trying to trump 14 games last year, 14 and 3, that would be a big leap for us. So that's, that would be a challenge. And I think we got to attack it one week at a time."
The quarterback demonstrated what a true leader he is, making it clear that he was only concerned with team victories instead of personal accomplishments.
"I am looking for our team to make a leap, really instead of me," he stated.
