Where do the New England Patriots stand in the league’s landscape after losing their season opener to the Seattle Seahawks?
Bleacher Report ranked the Patriots No. 12 in the league following the conclusion of Week 1, highlighting quarterback Drake Maye’s underwhelming performance as a story of the game.
“Drake Maye's performance Wednesday is definitely concerning, because the quarterback had all offseason to figure out what went wrong during Super Bowl LX and fix those issues,” the B/R piece read. “Instead, he threw three interceptions during the season-opener, including when the Patriots were in game-tying field-goal position late in the contest, then admitted he grew impatient.”
Maye’s costly interceptions factored largely into the loss for New
England. The Patriots also needed more from several contributors, including wide receiver Romeo Doubs and tight end Hunter Henry. Doubs, in particular, dropped a wide-open pass on a play that would have converted a major first down for the Patriots late in the game.
After the drop, Maye threw an interception to the Seahawks.
Not only did the Patriots lose the game, but they also lost star wide receiver A.J. Brown to an ankle injury. The former three-time All-Pro is dealing with a high ankle sprain that could keep him sidelined for up to six weeks. He will miss four games at a minimum after being placed on injured reserve.
After all the games have been played, the Patriots are not to be automatically written off as Super Bowl contenders in knee-jerk fashion, but they do have work to do to increase their standing among the league’s best teams.
