New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye showed his support for wide receiver Kyle Williams, as the Patriots look to bounce back against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
Williams didn't have many offensive opportunities in the Week 1 loss, but he was able to make an impact on special teams, recording two kicks for 58 yards. He played on 12-of-71 offensive snaps and ran seven total routes on passing plays without recording a single catch.
However, that might change on Sunday with A.J. Brown on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Williams will be one of multiple receivers called on to step up in Brown's absence.
“Since the day he got here he’s wanted to get better and prove he’s not just a speed guy," Maye said on WEEI radio. "I think he understands
the offense, he’s smart, he’s got great route craft, and he’s got a release game that is really top level. I’m looking forward to getting more and more reps with him. He made some big-time plays for us last year and he’ll get some chances to go catch and run, because he can obviously run.”
Along with Williams, the Patriots are down to Romeo Doubs, DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins and Efton Chism III. There is no one-man replacement for a player like Brown, but as a collective group, the Patriots can still find ways to attack the Steelers' offense.
And Williams might be one of the go-to weapons.
