FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – "Don't get fined."
Veteran linebacker Christian Elliss didn't hesitate when asked what advice he would provide to the rookies participating in their first joint practice and first preseason game this week. The question caused him to reflect on what happened during his first season in the league, and he certainly remembers it.
"Don't get fined. My very first play in the NFL, I got fined. I think 6K, so that wasn't fun," he revealed. "That was probably the number one thing I would say."
So, what exactly happened?
"They said it was helmet-to-helmet. It was a slant. I remember it was against, pretty sure the Broncos. I came and I hit him pretty good, and yeah, I got that envelope," Elliss explained. "So that wasn't fun. Tried to get
it reduced or removed. It was my first play in the league."
For him, it was somewhat of his "welcome to the NFL" moment.
"Yeah, for the money portion. I was like, 'I'm undrafted. Haven't made the squad yet. And I'm already getting fined 6K," he added. "I told my wife, and she was like, 'Are you kidding me?'"
However, he did provide one extra piece of advice after this trip down memory lane.
"Just enjoy the moment," Elliss expressed. "At the end of the day, you look to your left, you look to your right. You have guys who are the best of the best in college, and now they're playing with you in the league, so it's an exciting moment at the end of the day."
